abstract
In order to assess geohazards, potential triggering mechanisms need to be identified and characterized. Potential triggering mechanisms for offshore sediment failures include seismic loading, gassing, offshore construction, static loading, wave loading, etc. (e.g., Driscoll et al. 2000, Solheim et al. 2005). Through interaction with both international partners who have extensive experience with geohazard failures in the
offshore environment (e.g., Solheim et al. 2005), we will assemble a set of reasonable loading mechanisms to be used in a numerical analysis of potential geohazard failures. Failures in geologic materials can be induced by both static and dynamic loads. For any dynamic loading condition, the soil behavior depends on the frequency content, duration, and intensity of the loads.
